Tomato Soup (Chettinad) is a nice and simple recipe, which often finds a place in all Chettinad Menus. Tomato Soup (Chettinad) is made with just dal stock instead of the regular vegetable stock unlike in other cuisine.
Fennel Seeds, Cinnamon Stick and Pepper enhance the flavor of the Tomato Soup (Chettinad) which just includes tomatoes and dal stock.
A modified version made out of Cauliflower is often served in all Chettinad weddings.
Let us now see how to make Tomato Soup (Chettinad):
Tomato Soup (Chettinad) Ingredients:
Tuvar dal - 2 tblsp
Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
Tomato - 1 big
Onion -1
Green chilli - 2
Curry leaves - few
Coriander - few
Water - 2 cups
To temper
Fennel seed - ¼ tsp
Pepper - ¼ tsp
Cinnamon - ½ inch
Oil - 2 tsp
Tomato Soup (Chettinad) Method:
Cook tuvar dal with turmeric powder. Add water and mash it well. Cut onion and green chilli lengthwise. Chop tomato finely.
Heat oil in a pan add fennel, pepper and cinnamon. Add curry leaves, green chilli, onion, and tomato one by one and sauté for five minutes.
Finally add dal stock and salt and allow it to boil for some time or pressure cook. Finally add coriander leaf and serve hot.
Note:
Dal mashed water is the stock for this soup.
Add water according to your requirement.
If you want you can add vegetables. (carrot, beans, cauli flower)
You can add greens also.
