Maa Vilakku (Chettinad)
Offering Maavilakku is a custom in most Tamil homes and it is made in traditional method still in many Nagarathar families (Chettinad). Usually, Maavilakku is offered during Karthigai Deepam, but In Nagarathar families it is also offered to God on Aadi Velli, Thai Velli and Purattasi Sani days.
Usually maavilakku is made only with maavilakku maavu (lamp made with edible rice flour) but in Nagarathar families it is offered in a traditional pure silver vessel, which is usually presented to the bride by her mother during the time of her marriage.
Let us see how to make Maa vilakku
Preparation time - 30 minutes
Soaking time - 20 minutes
Yield - 2 big vilakku
Ingredients:
Raw rice - 1 cup
Grated Jaggery - ¾ cup
Ghee - 2 tblsp
Method:
Rinse the raw rice two to three times and soak it for about 20 minutes. After 20 minutes drain the water and spread in the kitchen under the fan for 10 minutes.
Grind it in the mixer and sieve it.
Add jaggery and rice flour in the mixer and run just few seconds. If the maa vilakku dough is watery you can add rice flour and knead in to a smooth dough.
Make dent in the centre with fingers and add ghee and wick(thiri)and light the maa vilakku.
Note:
Don’t add all the flour at once, keep ½ cup rice flour. You can check the consistency of the dough and add.
Add jaggery according to your taste. This amount is enough for me.
You can use the store bought rice flour also. But fresh homemade flour tastes good.
