Kollu Chutney

Kollu Chutney
Kollu is known as Macrotyloma uniflorum botanically and is also commonly known as horse gram or Madras gram.  Kollu is a less popular bean gram which is often used as a whole as cattle feed, especially as horse feed, hence the name Horse Gram.
Horse gram is a legume of the tropical region, grown in dry-lands.

In Tamil Nadu, Kollu or Horse Gram is known as Kaanam in Southern Districts and is cmmonly used in dishes such as Kollu Chutney, Kollu Thuvaiyal, Kollu Porial, Kollu Avial, Kollu Sambar, Kollu Rasam, etc,. In traditional Indian Medicine, horse gram is considered a food with lots of Medicinal qualities.

In Kerala, Kollu or Horse Gram is known as Muthira and is used in special dishes.

In Andhra Pradesh, horse gram is known as Ulava or Ulavalu and is prescribed as a medicine for jaundice, oedema (water retention) and used as a Weight Loss diet. It is also useful in iron deficiencies and to maintain body temperatures in winter. season. Use of Kollu is very common in Andhra Pradesh and it is often served as a delicacy in most Weddings and Ceremonies.

Now let us make Kollu Thuvaiyal or Kollu Chutney.

Kollu Chutney Ingredients:
Kollu (Horse gram) - ¼ cup
Coconut        - 4 tblsp
Red chilli        - 4
Garlic flakes - 2
Salt         - to taste
Kollu Chutney Method:
Dry roast kollu in a pan till golden brown colour. Grate the coconut. Peel the garlic.

 Add all the ingredients in a mixie and grind it nicely.

 Serve with idli, dosa or rice with rasam.

Note:
If you want you can temper with mustard and urad dal in little oil.
This chutney will go well with rasam and rice and curd rice also.
