Ganesh Chaturthi


Ganesh Chaturthi is the birthday or rebirth of Lord Ganesh. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in India with great importance as Lord Ganesh is one among the important deities worshiped in India. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated for about 3 to 5 days generally and in some parts it is celebrated for about 10 – 12 days. Usually Ganesh Chaturthi falls during the last week of August or on first week of September every year on the fourth day after the new moon in the Tamil month Aavani. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as one among the most important festivals celebrated by Hindus in India and abroad. Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi.

Usually the festival involves the newly created Lord Ganesh in clay or plaster of paris, which is worshipped throughout the celebration, be it 3 days or 12 days. It is generally believed that Ganesha showers prosperity and wealth by his presence in the Earth during these celebrations.
Ganesh Chaturthi

Though Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated throughout the world it is most celebrated in Maharashtra and other Western States of India. In South India especially in Tamil Nadu it is celebrated for one day only and the poojas are performed to the Clay Ganesha for 3 – 5 days and at the end of the celebrations, the Ganesha idol is taken round the place in carts and finally immersed in the lakes, pond or Sea. In homes it is immersed in well too were open well is available.

In Tamil Nadu Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Pillayar Chaturthi. In Tamil the clay Ganesha is known as Kazhimann Pillaiyar and it is worshiped with the Bermuda grass known as Arugampul in Tamil and lots of garlands and flowers. Many special recipes like Mothagam, Kozhukkattai and Kondakkadalai Sundal are prepared for this occasion and many sweets like Laddu, Jilebi, Milk Sweets and lots of fruits and other eatables are offered to Lord Ganesha during the celebration.

Here are a few Recipes which can be prepared and offered to Lord Ganesha during these Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Try for yourself they are easy and simple.


Pidi Kozhukattai

Pidi Kozhukattai is a savory version of kozhukattai. It is easy to make and good to taste. It is a healthy snack too.
Mothakam is little difficult compared to pidi kozhukattai.




Ulundu Kozhukattai or Uppu Kozhukattai


Ulundu Kozhukattai or Uppu kozhukattai is a savory prepared during vinyagar chaturthi.
Pooranam is as same as usli but only the dal is different. Pooranam tastes like ulundu vada.


Ammini kozhukattai

I make mothagam and ulundu kozhukattai during vinayagar chaturthi. With the left out white dough I make ammini kozhukattai every year. My son loves ammini kozhukattai (masala) only.  Now for the post, I made with fresh dough.




Ellu Urundai

Sesame is good for health. It controls anemia and improve hemoglobin level. Especially it is good for ladies. We offer ellu urundai, ellu poorna kozhukattai to Lord Ganesha during vinayagar chaturthi. Vinayagar Chaturthi is coming on August 29. So we can make this easy ellu urundai recipe and celebrate vinayagar chaturthi.






Black Channa Sundal

Vinayagar Chaturthi is fast  approaching. Without channa sundal there is no vinayagar chaturthi. I made this sundal long back, but i reserved to publish for vinayagar chaturthi.






Channa Sundal

Mothagam or Modhak is a traditional recipe which is often prepared in Ganesha Temples for Vinayagar Chathurthi or some special occasion. It is also prepared in Tamil Homes and offered to Lord Ganesha.





Home Made Rice Flour

Festival season is going to begin. So we can make rice flour in the free time and store it in the air tight container. Whenever we need rice flour we can use it. It can be used for six months or more.





Sago Payasam

Sago Payasam is a common Payasam dish prepared with Javvarisi or Sago. This can be also prepared with Vermicelli with little variations.





Semiya Payasam or Vermicelli Payasam

Semiya Payasam is a very nice recipe for Celebrations and festivals. This is normally prepared during festival times, especially the Tamil New Year or Onam Sadya time. It is so very easy and it tastes so nice with full of texture and flavour.



Vada or Medhu Vada

South India is famous for its Idly, Vada and Sambar combination and is well known throughout the World. I have even seen some gigantic machine making vadas in some video of foreign country.
